In 1881 Takematsu authored a woodblock-printed picture book entitled Sōmoku Kachō Zue (i.e., Collection of Pictures of Plants, Flowers and Birds). The book's twelve pictures are shown in this gallery. Click on a picture to enlarge it. Each picture included many different species of flowers and birds interacting in a fictional scene. In the real world most of the species depicted would never be found together. To further enhance the pictures’ visual appeal they were printed using bright colors derived from chemically-produced dyes imported from Europe.
